Description:

The collection consists of 53 photographs by Felice Beato (Italian-British, 1832-1909). The photographs, which are all albumen prints, are views of buildings and villages, primarily in Lucknow, but also in Calcutta and Delhi, following the events of the Sepoy Rebellion, 1857-1858 (a.k.a., the Indian Mutiny). Also included are four views of the destruction of the Ta-ku Fort in north China, following the Anglo-French storming during the Arrow, or second Opium, War. Notable buildings pictured include: the Taj Mahal (Agra); the Shahnajaf Emambara (Lucknow); the Chhota Emambara, (a.k.a., the Hussainabad Imambara), the tomb of Mohammad Ali Shah (Lucknow); the Marble Palace in Fort Agra (a.k.a., the Red Fort) (Agra); and the Chattar Manzil palace (Lucknow).
