Description: |
Egypt, Sinai, and Jerusalem (London: William Mackenzie, 1860) is a photographically illustrated book containing 20 albumen prints by Francis Frith (British, 1822–1898), made between 1857 and 1860. This volume represents the first published form of the series, originally issued in ten parts between 1858 and 1860. The series was later reissued by James S. Virtue in 1862. Bound in green half leather with green cloth-covered boards, gilt lettering, and gilt edges, the elephant folio (approximately 29.5 × 22 inches) contains 20 mammoth-plate albumen prints (approximately 15 × 19 inches), each mounted on card and accompanied by descriptive letterpress authored by Sophia Lane Poole (British, 1804–1891) and her son Reginald Stuart Poole (British, 1832–1895), credited on the title page as Mrs. Poole and Reginald Stuart Poole. The front pastedown bears the bookplate of John Joicey. The folio contains 18 photographs of Egypt, depicting ancient monuments and urban landscapes; one photograph of Sinai, showing its mountainous desert terrain; and one photograph of Jerusalem, presenting a panoramic view of the city from a distance. Collectively, the photographs depict sites of historical, religious, and archaeological interest across Egypt and the Holy Land. This volume is part of the Gernsheim Collection, acquired in 1963. |
