Description:

The collection consists of 43 photographs by Francis Frith (British, 1822-1898) and/or Francis Frith & Co. (British, active 1859–1971), made between 1851 and 1904, including 38 albumen prints (nine unmounted, on hand-colored), two collotypes, one platinum print, one gelatin silver print, and one in an unidentified process on metal. Dimensions range from 4 × 7 inches to 20 × 16 inches. 

The photographs depict natural landscapes and historic architecture across England, Wales, Switzerland, Italy, and Spain, with an emphasis on cathedrals, abbeys, castles, and bridges. Of the 43 prints, 34 belong to the Gernsheim Collection, acquired in 1963; the remaining nine prints are part of the Photography Collection.
