Description:

The Gossiping Photographer on the Rhine (Reigate: Frith, 1864) is a photographically illustrated book by Francis Frith (British, 1822–1898), printed by James S. Virtue in London. The 32-page volume, bound in green leather with gilt lettering and gilt edges, contains 16 mounted albumen prints made in 1863. 


Written in a travelogue style, the book follows Frith’s journey along the Rhine River in Germany, blending narrative text with photographs that document the region’s landscapes and architectural features. The images, interspersed throughout the volume, depict towns, vineyards, and castles along the Rhine. This volume serves as a companion to The Gossiping Photographer at Hastings (1864), also authored and illustrated by Frith.


The book is part of the Gernsheim Collection, acquired in 1963.
