Description: |
The Gossiping Photographer on the Rhine (Reigate: Frith, 1864) is a photographically illustrated book by Francis Frith (British, 1822–1898), printed by James S. Virtue in London. This 32-page volume, bound in green leather with gold tooling and gilt edges, contains 16 mounted albumen prints made in 1863. The book serves as a travelogue of Frith's journey along the Rhine River in Germany, blending narrative text with images that capture the landscapes and architectural features of the region. The photographs, interspersed throughout, depict views of towns, vineyards, and castles along the Rhine. This volume serves as a companion to The Gossiping Photographer at Hastings (1864), also authored and illustrated by Frith. The book is part of the Gernsheim Collection, acquired in 1963. |
