Description: |
The Book of the Thames: From Its Rise to Its Fall (London: Alfred W. Bennett and Virtue & Co., 1867) is a photographically illustrated book written by Anna Maria Hall (Irish, 1800–1881) and Samuel Carter Hall (Irish, 1800–1889), originally published in 1859. This edition features 15 mounted albumen prints by Francis Frith (British, 1822–1898), made between 1857 and 1867, alongside 140 wood-engraved illustrations. The volume is bound in maroon leather with elaborate gilt tooling, gilt edges, and a circular gilt-stamped title encircling an albumen print affixed to the front cover. Written in the style of a travelogue, the 208-page volume traces the course of the River Thames from its source in the Cotswolds to its mouth at the North Sea. The photographs interspersed throughout serve as a companion to the text and primarily depict landscapes along the river, including views of towns, castles, and churches. This volume is part of the Gernsheim Collection, acquired in 1963.
