Description: |
Egypt and Palestine, Photographed and Described by Francis Frith (London: Virtue, 1858–1860) is a photographically illustrated book containing 76 photographs by Francis Frith (British, 1822–1898), made between 1857 and 1858. Originally issued by subscription in 25 parts, it was later consolidated into two bound volumes. Both volumes are bound in green leather with blind-stamped decorative borders, gilt lettering on the covers and spines, and gilt edges. Volume I contains 37 albumen prints (964:0494:0001–0037), and Volume II contains 39 albumen prints (964:0498:0001–0039). Each photograph, measuring approximately 7 × 9 inches, is accompanied by descriptive letterpress text authored by Frith. The photographs document Frith’s first and possibly second expedition to Egypt and the Middle East, focusing on the region historically known as the Holy Land (including parts of present-day Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria). The accompanying text, written in a travelogue style, blends personal narrative with historical context and references to biblical sites and narratives. Egypt and Palestine, Photographed and Described by Francis Frith is part of the Gernsheim Collection, acquired in 1963. |
