Description: |
The Gossiping Photographer at Hastings (Reigate: Frith, 1864) is a photographically illustrated book by Francis Frith (British, 1822–1898), printed by James S. Virtue in London. The 29-page volume, bound in green leather with gilt lettering and gilt edges, contains 16 mounted albumen prints made in 1863. Written in a travelogue style, the book centers on Hastings, a coastal resort town in England known for its natural beauty and seaside activity, blending Frith’s descriptive text with photographs that capture the region’s landscapes and architectural features. The title page is a composite image featuring a landscape view of Hastings and two portraits of Frith, overlaid with text. The 15 subsequent photographs highlight historic buildings, monuments, streets, and coastal views throughout Hastings and its neighboring towns. This volume serves as a companion to The Gossiping Photographer on the Rhine (1864), also authored and illustrated by Frith. The book is part of the Gernsheim Collection, acquired in 1963. |
