Description: |
The Gossiping Photographer at Hastings (Reigate: Frith, 1864) is a photographically illustrated book by Francis Frith (British, 1822–1898), printed by James S. Virtue in London. The 29-page volume, bound in green leather with gilt lettering and gilt edges, contains 16 mounted albumen prints made in 1863. The front pastedown endpaper is inscribed by Helmut Gernsheim, identifying this copy as having belonged to Frith himself, with manuscript notations throughout the pages of text. Written in a travelogue style, the book centers on Hastings, a coastal resort town in England known for its natural scenery and seaside activity, blending Frith’s descriptive text with photographs that document the region’s landscapes and architectural features. The title page is a composite image combining a landscape view of Hastings with two portraits of Frith, overlaid with text. The 15 subsequent photographs depict historic buildings, monuments, streets, and coastal views throughout Hastings and its neighboring towns. The volume serves as a companion to The Gossiping Photographer on the Rhine (1864), also authored and illustrated by Frith. |
