Description: |
Photographically illustrated book, entitled Egypt, Nubia, and Ethiopia (London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1862), "illustrated by one hundred stereoscopic photographs, taken by Francis Frith for Messrs. Negretti and Zambra, with descriptions and numerous wood engravings by Joseph Bonomi, F.R.S.L., author of 'Nineveh and its Places;' and notes by Samuel Sharpe, author of 'The History of Egypt.'" Per the preface: "The following sun-pictures of the ancient ruined buildings on the banks of the Nile were made for Messrs. Negretti and Zambra by Mr. Frith, during a visit to Egypt, Nubia and Ethiopia, in the years 1859, 1860." The Ransom Center's copy contains 98 mounted albumen prints (stereographs) by Frith (British, 1822-1898). It is lacking plate I (The Mosque of Sultan Hassan--Cairo) and plate LVII (The smaller Temple of Philae). Plate XLVI appears out of order and is tipped into the book before the title page. The paste down end paper of the front cover is stamped: "GERNSHEIM COLLECTION.". |
