Description: |
My Cruise in the "Red Rose," 1873 (Rugby, England: Tait & Sons, 1876), is a photographically illustrated book and travelogue by M. E. Williams, featuring photographs by Francis Frith (British, 1822–1898), Francis Frith & Co. (British, active 1859–1971), Frank Mason Good (British, 1839–1928), and an unidentified photographer. The 127-page volume is bound in black leather with a gilt-stamped emblem, blind-stamped borders, and gilt edges. . The armorial bookplate of John Lancaster appears on the pastedown endpaper. The travelogue narrates an eight-month journey along the Red River, during which Williams accompanied either John or George Lancaster and his wife, recounting observations at destinations throughout Europe and the Middle East. Interspersed throughout are 13 mounted albumen prints made between 1851 and 1876, serving as a visual extension of the text. Of these, ten are attributed to Francis Frith and/or Francis Frith & Co., two to Frank Mason Good (employed by Frith & Co.), and one to an unidentified photographer. The photographs primarily depict landscapes, towns, and notable historical sites, including ruins and prominent architectural landmarks, with locations including Sintra, Gibraltar, Pompeii, Naples, Athens, İzmir (formerly Smyrna), Damascus, Baalbek, Jerusalem, Cairo, Luxor, and Karnak. This volume is part of the Gernsheim Collection, acquired in 1963. |
